The Holy Cup

‘The viticulteur rarely asks, “What is terroir?” Because he himself is part of it!’ So says Pierre Clavel, one of the eighties vanguard of the Languedoc renaissance.  He remains one of its avant-garde, producing some of the best wine from the Grès de Montpellier area of the Côteaux du Languedoc.
Pierre, his wife Estelle and their sons, live and work at the Mas de Périé, a hilltop property near Assas, north of Montpellier, which has two gîtes. Here the senses are seduced by the perfume of the sun-baked garrigue, the tinkling bells of grazing sheep, the susurrating breeze in the plane trees, the long vistas across the vine-strewn valley…and then you taste the wine! Ripe and rich, the GSM (grenache, syrah, mourvedre) reds are aromatic, structured, lively and mineral – real vins de garde. Pierre’s top cuvée is named after the region’s best known patriotic song ‘La Copa Santa’ whose chorus seems to sum-up the Clavels’ ardent spirit:
Holy, overflowing cup
May you pour abundantly
May you pour in streams
The enthusiasm
And the energy of the strong
